The Member States of the European Union, according to the NUTS 2021 revision, are divided into 1,500 NUTS units: 92 units of NUTS level 1, 242 units of NUTS level 2, and 1166 units of NUTS level 3. Since 2003, when the Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics has been introduced, the number of units increased overall by 124, taking into account the reduction by 232 units as a result of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union..

 

a Taking into account the classifications of Czechia, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia, which has been formally in force since 26 November 2005.

b Before the classifications were determined for 10 newly admitted countries, the NUTS classification consisted of 72 units at NUTS level 1, 213 units at NUTS level 2, and 1,091 units at NUTS level 3.

c Taking into account the classifications of Bulgaria and Romania, which has been formally in force since 6 March 2008.

d Taking into account the changes in the classification of Portugal, which has been formally in force since 1 January 2016. However, according to the operating agreement with the Portuguese statistical office, it has been applicable from 1 January 2015.

e Until 31 January 2020 as part of the European Union, from 1 February 2020 as part of the classification of territorial units for statistics in the non-Member States of the EU.
