234th anniversary of the 3rd of May Constitution

The year 2025 marks the 234th anniversary of the 3rd of May Constitution - a symbol of freedom, modernity and concern for the common good. Adopted in 1791 by the Four-Year Sejm, it was the first in Europe and the second in the world fundamental law regulating the state system in a modern and comprehensive manner.
It is worth recalling that in the same period - during the deliberations of the Great Sejm - the Constitution of 22 June 1789 on the taking of the first population census was also adopted. This document gave rise to Polish population statistics. It took into account not only the number of inhabitants, but also their social and occupational structure - which remains the foundation of modern public statistics to this day.
Modern public statistics continues this mission, using modern tools, digital databases and advanced methods of analysis. The last National Census was conducted in 2021 and the compilation of its results was completed in 2024. Data are available on the Statistics Poland website and in the resources of the Statistics Poland: Local Data Bank, Knowledge Databases and Geostatics Portal.
The 3 May Constitution and the first census are two pillars of a responsible state - they combine the values of freedom, community care and data-driven governance. Let this anniversary remind us of the importance of the role of statistics in building a modern and informed society.
