Statistics in focus The demand for labour in the first quarter of 2020

At the end of the first quarter of 2020, the number of job vacancies in Poland, in entities of the national economy or in their local units employing at least 1 person, was 76.5 thousand and was 48.9 thousand or 39.0% lower than at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019. As compared to the end of the first quarter of 2019, the number of vacancies was lower by 65.9 thousand or 46.3%. At the end of the first quarter of 2020, there were still 16.2 thousand unfilled newly created jobs.

In April 2020 retail sales at constant prices were by 22.9% lower than the year before (against a growth of 11.9% in April 2019). Compared with March 2020 retail sales decreased by 12.3%. In the period of January-April2 2020 retail sales y/y were by 5.8% lower (against a growth of 6.5% in 2019).

In May business tendency is assessed less negative than in the previous month in most presented kinds of activities, although further deterioration of current assessments (“diagnosis”) and improvement of expectations (“forecast”) are observed. The latter, however, remain at historically negative levels.

Statistics in focus Index numbers of sold production of industry in April 2020

In April 2020, sold production of industry was by 24.6% lower than in April 2019, when the growth was recorded by 9.2%, whereas in comparison with March 2020, it decreased by 25.5%. In the period January-April of 2020, sold production of industry was by 5.6% lower than in the corresponding period of 2019, which saw a 6.8% increase.
