Both the layout and total length of inland waterways in Poland have remained largely unchanged for many years. At the same time, a downward trend in the volume of goods transported by Polish fleet operators via inland waterways has been observed. The main factors limiting the freight volume and overall transport performance include inadequately developed waterways and unfavourable navigational conditions. This affects specific design of vessels with constrained technical parameters – in particular reduced barge cargo capacity. These conditions have a direct impact on the scale of freight operations. Given the relatively low level of inland waterway transport, the volume of goods carried, measured in tonnes, tends to fluctuate significantly, partly due to the seasonal or irregular nature of this mode of transport.
