Server


Definition:

Computer designed to handle several users, equipped in fast processor (or a few processors), a sufficiently large RAM and storage (typically a few hard discs or system of connected hard discs), with installed software providers service in the network.



The server may e.g. share printers, files, provide access to the Internet (WWW) or electronic mail, etc. A role of server can play computers with different parameters - from the powerful central computer (mainframe), by high-efficent computers capable to support from tens to hundreds of users simultaneously (called the server due to their function), even to ordinary personal computers that have installed the software which allow to access to services by other programs or computers running inside the same network, e.g. providing files or printers on a home LAN.
