Perinatal mortality

Description of the concept that applied to: 31.12.2017


Definition:
All born dead (fetal deaths) and deaths of infants (who died in the first week of life), whose birth weight was at least 500 grams or (when the born weight is not known) born after a reasonable period of pregnancy (22 weeks) or reaching the desired length of the body (25 cm from the top of the skull to heel).


This definition is recommended by WHO for the national purposes. For the purposes of international comparisons it is recommended to include stillborn babies and early deaths of newborns, that weighted at least 1000 grams at the moment of birth or (if the birth weight is unknown) born after 28 weeks of the pregnancy duration or reaching at least 35 cm of the body length.
