Definition:
An institution of the European Union composed of representatives of the Union's citizens, who are directly elected by universal suffrage for a five-year term. Together with the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament exercises the legislative and budgetary functions of the European Union and performs functions of political control and consultation in accordance with the provisions of the European Union treaties.
