Definition:

Complete expulsion or extraction from the mother's system of product conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy.



For the purposes of national statistics the medical documentation concerning the perinatal period should contain all live born infants and foetuses (still births), who weighted at least 500 grams at the moment of birth and – if the birthweight is unknown – reached 22 weeks of life (gestational age) or reached 25 cm of the body length (crown-heel).
Recommended by the WHO definition of birth and death of an infant has been introduced in Poland since 1994. Data on births (total, broken down by urban areas and rural areas) for the years 1946-1993 was calculated once again accordingly with the recommended by WHO definitione criteria.
