Nominal scale


Definition:

Type of measurement scale. A variable is on a nominal scale if it takes values (labels) for which there is no inherent ordering. Even if values of the nominal variable are expressed numerically, these numbers are only conventional identifiers, so they can not be subject to arithmetic operations nor compared.Examples of features measured on a nominal scale are: city names, eye colour, sex, "yes / no" answer string.
