New media


Definition:

Generic term for the many different forms of electronic communication that are made possible through the use of computer technology, which includes electronic publishing on CD-ROM, DVD, digital television and, most significantly, the Internet.



It implies the use of desktop and portable computers as well as other wireless, handheld devices for communication needs. New media include: Web sites, e-mail, online communities, Web advertising, electronic kiosks, digital cameras, integration of digital data with the telephone, virtual reality environments (including video games). The term is in relation to "old" media forms, such as print newspapers and magazines, that are static representations of text and graphics. An exhibition using new media is an exhibition presented by using modern methods, that is, non-traditional exhibits, forms and techniques, such as computer animation, arrangement of space (installation), design, video, etc.
