Security protocol

Definition:

The protocol which provides secure communication over a computer network such as the Internet. Such protocols use encryption technology to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of transmitted information and to verify the identity of the sender.

When managing a transaction e.g. in online shop without the use of security protocol, there exists a risk of unauthorized interception of data entered, such as credit card number. To prevent such risks the protocols such as SSL and TLS came into being, whose task is to encrypt the transmission between the server and browser.
