Asynchronous Transfer Mode

Definition:

Network protocol and the technical standard of digital broadband telecommunication networks, which can be transmitted both voice calls in fixed telephony, high-quality images with teleconference facilities, as well as any data in digital form. ATM can be used in fiber optic networks and use of copper cables.

In this technology, data packets are always the same size and there is no need for routers. However, due to the relatively high demand for bandwidth throughput reserved for synchronization and signaling mechanisms (the order of 1 Mbps) ATM is usually only used in backbone networks for telecommunication operators and customers.
