We are pleased to inform you that the team of Statistics Poland composed of: Paulina Małek, Michał Bis (both representing the Statistical Office in Szczecin) and Jacek Maślankowski (Statistical Office in Gdańsk) proved to be the best and won the Big Data Hackathon. The event organised by the European Commission (Eurostat) was aimed at selecting the best application projects using Big Data.

The winning team has created an application that allows analysing the time budget. It uses technologies and methods of access to Big Data. The application is characterised by innovation - it uses collections prepared on the basis of machine-generated data, which include location of people based on the location of mobile phones.

The hackathon organisers provided participants with four sets of such data. These were actual data collected as part of the pilot survey on a population of selected European countries.

The application allows access to 32 predefined indicators that enable, among others, overview of tables, charts and maps. With it, you can also access a whole range of indicators that are created on the basis of microdata (a so-called “data engineer's cockpit” was also prepared). This allows to check the places where inhabitants of different European countries reside. You can follow their ways of travel and routes of transport that they use to commute to work or school.

It is worth to indicate two advantages of the application:

• replicability - the ability to use other statistical offices through implementation of open source software

• openness of the source code - it is published in the official repository of Polish official statistics.

The presentation of the best applications took place during this year's conference New Techniques and Technologies for Statistics (NTTS), held on 12-14 March in Brussels. The second place was taken by the team representing Italian statistics, and the third by a team from Great Britain. Congratulations!
