Human resources in selected medical professions based on administrative sources in 2023

The study is the result of an analysis of administrative sources, including registers, in relation to five medical professions: doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and physiotherapists1. It showcases the resulting statistical data for the resources of the medical staff, as well as description of applied methodology of data analysis.

In 2023, the number of doctors working directly with patients was 137,420; dentists – 36,002; nurses – 216,086; midwives – 28,527 and physiotherapists – 59,136.

Correction dated 9th September 2025

​An adjustment has been made regarding the number of physicians and dentists practising  in 2023 – changes caused by errors in one of the source data sets, and on the number of physiotherapists practising with in 2022 and 2023 – changes caused by a correction in the development of one of the variables. Changes to the text have been made on pages (1-8, 14-15) and in the tabular annex in Tables 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 18, 19.
