Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT)


Definition:

Computer-controlled or micro-electronics-based equipment used in the design, manufacture or handling of a product.



Typical uses include CAD/CAM systems (computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacture), CAE (computer-assisted engineering), flexible processing centres, robots, automatic guided transport vehicles (AGVS system) and AS/RS systems (automatic handling and storage of materials, parts, sub-assemblies and finished products). The abovementioned equipment and systems can be connected via local area networks (LAN) into FMS systems (flexible manufacturing system) and finally into computer integrated production systems (CIM system, i.e. computer integrated manufacturing).
